Genesis Sun

A small group of Year 11 students recently attended the Genesis Sun Event at the Wolverhampton Molineux Football Ground.  Genesis Sun was established to give young black students from the region a platform and space to think about their future, achieved through inspirational speakers, black history, education, and entertainment all rolled into monthly events.

The students heard from guest speaker Sonny Hanley – Controller of Content Services for ITV.  Sonny spoke about his journey, aspiring from the age of 9 to work in TV and how hard work and determination helped him to achieve his goals despite some of the challenges he had faced by being the only black person amongst staff of over 300 people.  He was full of great advice and was passionate about ensuring there was more representation in the sector.

He now controls all of ITV programming in an extremely senior role.

Entertainment was by DJ Day Day, a very well-known DJ who the students were excited to meet. There were some performances by local young people from the Black Country who our students knew and appreciated through social media, including rapper Jevzinoo from a local school in Bilston. Genesis Sun hopes to give young people the platform to perform and grow their following.

An ITV camera crew were at the event to film for the ITV Central News programme, so it was great Sonny was the guest speaker at this event to tie into the Broadcast media theme. If you do get a chance please tune in, you may catch a glimpse of our students.  You can see the segment here.

The students who attended were great, they participated in the activities, networked, contributed to the discussions, supported the performers (Adam knew every word to Jevinzoo’s rap!), and made new friends – an absolute asset to the school.
